What We Do

We work with accredited universities that offer advanced degrees to women in support of their work as change agents. Since our founding, we have been working in Rwanda.

Our Mission

Empowering Women in Education, Inc. provides access to college and graduate programs for women who could otherwise not afford to attend.  We are particularly focused on ensuring access to education and professional development in the areas of gender, culture, and development.  We must educate a new generation of women leaders who reflect the diversity of the globe and whose voices need to be heard.

“We dedicate our work to these graduates and to others they have inspired through their curiosity, their work and the lives they lead, and we acknowledge your leadership. We are grateful to have the opportunity to support those who could not have otherwise afforded to attend.”

— Shirley Randell, Tribute to the Graduates of Rwanda’s Master’s Programme on Gender and Development, President of Empowering Women in Education, Inc.

What We’ve Achieved

Scholarships Made

Our goal is to raise sufficient funds for at least two half-scholarships a year. We have met or achieved that goal since our founding, making all scholarship funds raised thus far available to students enrolled in the University of Rwanda’s Master’s Program in Social Sciences (Gender & Development).  Founded by Dr. Shirley Randell at the Kigali Institute’s Centre for Gender, Culture, and Development, the program has since moved to the University of Rwanda.  Graduates of the program serve in senior leadership positions in government, business, and nonprofit organizations in Rwanda and internationally.

How Do We Achieve Our Goals?

We work in partnership with other organizations that promote women’s education and global gender equity to raise awareness about the need to ensure access to key programs in gender, women, and development.  We raise money through speaker fees and individual donations.  For scholarships made in Rwanda, the University of Rwanda Solidarity and Development Foundation selects recipients (in consultation with our board) and disburses the funds.
